1:Around my door and yard no dust or noise. In my bare rooms, no busyness. After so long a prisoner in a cage I have returned to things as they are

~ Tao Chien, Around my door and yard no dust or noise
,
2:In youth I could not do what everyone else did; It was my nature to love the mountains and hills. By mistake I got caught in the dusty snare, I went away and stayed for thirteen years.

~ Tao Chien, In youth I could not do what everyone else did
,
3:I built my hut within where others live, But there is no noise of carriages and horses. You ask how this is possible: When the heart is distant, solitude comes. I pluck chrysanthemums by the eastern fence And see the distant southern mountains. The mountain air is fresh at dusk. Flying birds return in flocks. In these things there lies a great truth, But when I try to express it, I cannot find the words.

~ Tao Chien, I built my hut within where others live
,
4:Autumn chrysanthemums have beautiful color, With dew in my clothes I pluck their flowers. I float this thing in wine to forget my sorrow, To leave far behind my thoughts of the world. Alone, I pour myself a goblet of wine; When the cup is empty, the pot pours for itself. As the sun sets, all activities cease; Homing birds, they hurry to the woods singing. Haughtily, I whistle below the eastern balcony -- I've found again the meaning of life. [2224.jpg] -- from Sunflower Splendor: Three Thousand Years of Chinese Poetry, Edited by Wu-chi Liu / Edited by Irving Yucheng Lo

~ Tao Chien, Autumn chrysanthemums have beautiful color
,
5:Unsettled, a bird lost from the flock -- Keeps flying by itself in the dusk. Back and forth, it has no resting place, Night after night, more anguished its cries. Its shrill sound yearns for the pure and distant -- Coming from afar, how anxiously it flutters! It chances to find a pine tree growing all apart; Folding its wings, it has come home at last. In the gusty wind there is no dense growth; This canopy alone does not decay. Having found a perch to roost on, In a thousand years it will not depart. [2224.jpg] -- from Sunflower Splendor: Three Thousand Years of Chinese Poetry, Edited by Wu-chi Liu / Edited by Irving Yucheng Lo

~ Tao Chien, Unsettled, a bird lost from the flock
,
6:Success and failure? No known address. This or that goes on, depending on the other. And who can say if Milord Shao was happier ruling a city, or sacked, his excellent melon patch? Hot, cold, summer, winter: don't they alternate? Mayn't a man's way wander on just so? Yes, those who "get there" know their opportunities... have learned to untie the knots of knowledge. But was it the notable or the notorious that our Sage spoke of? The latter he called opportunists. Those who get there, doubtless, know doubt nor care no more. Yet, doubt you not, nor do dead generals, who plotted carefully at what seemed opportune, and knew naught, right or wrong. If, of a sudden, you're offered fine wine, let the sun sink. Enjoy it. [2275.jpg] -- from The Shambhala Anthology of Chinese Poetry, Edited by J. P. Seaton

~ Tao Chien, Success and failure? No known address
,
7:I'd long felt these mountains and lakes beckoning, and wouldn't have thought twice, but my family and friends couldn't bear talk of living apart. Then one lucky day a strange feeling came over me, and I left, walking-stick in hand, for my western farm. No one was going back home: on those outland roads, farm after farm lay in empty ruins, but our thatch hut's already good as ever, and you'd think our new fields had been tended for years. When valley winds turn cold, spring wine eases hunger and work, and though it isn't strong, just baby-girl wine, it's better than nothing for worry. Distant -- as months and years pass away here, the bustling world's racket grows distant. Plowing and weaving provide all we use. Who needs anything more? Away, ever away into this hundred-year life and beyond, my story and I vanish together like this. [2225.jpg] -- from The Selected Poems of T'ao Ch'ien, Translated by David Hinton

~ Tao Chien, After Liu Chai-Sangs Poem
