Savitri.in - M P Pandit - Epigrams from Savitri

Note

Sri Aurobindo’s epic Savitri abounds in epigrams. These epigrams are of various kinds, each with its own appeal. There are some that sum up the past in one striking line, some that confidently predict the future. There are many that capture the present in its bewildering profusion. Quite a number of these are perceptions that adumbrate whole philosophies in the different spheres of life. Not a few knock out the mind and land one in the arms of the soul; the experience comes first, the meaning dawns afterwards.

A selection is offered here for such use as one is ready for: literary delectation, mental illumination, spiritual experience, yogic realisation.

Sentence numbers refer to the First Edition (1950-51) of Savitri.

Old forms of evil cling to the world’s soul: ||107.33||

On inner values hangs the outer plan. ||51.28||

On peaks beyond our ken the All-Wisdom sits: ||71.48||

On Shiva’s breast is stayed the enormous dance. ||68.14||

On sorrowless heights no winging cry disturbs, ||84.4||

One man’s perfection still can save the world. ||127.31||

One mighty deed can change the course of things; ||4.39||

One who has shaped this world is ever its lord: ||12.28||

…oneness is the soul of multitude. ||6.45||

Only a glimmer sometimes splits mind’s sky ||37.26||

Only a little lifted is Mind’s screen. ||98.26||

Only a little the God-light can stay: ||1.39||

Only a slow advance the earth can bear. ||67.10||

Only beginnings are accomplished here; ||19.8||

Only by hard sacrifice is high heaven earned: ||108.53||

Only for good the secret Will can work. ||106.79||

…only half God’s cosmic work is done. ||80.8||

Only in human limits man lives safe. ||136.28||

Only in limits can man’s strength be safe; ||110.27||

Only one boon, to greaten thy spirit, demand; ||89.67||

Only one joy, to raise thy kind, desire. ||89.67||

Only the fringe of a wide surge we see; ||45.6||

Only the pure in soul can walk in light. ||109.4||

…only the spirit’s vision is wholly true. ||125.33||

…only we play with our own brilliant bonds; ||72.16||

Only what sense can grasp seems absolute: ||68.9||

Only who save themselves can others save. ||121.5||

Our acts emerge from a crypt our minds ignore. ||45.10||

Our acts interpret an omniscient Force ||101.2||

Our being looks beyond its walls of mind ||30.25||

Our being must move eternally through Time; ||54.18||

…our body is a mystery shop; ||45.11||

Our body’s cells must hold the Immortal’s flame. ||7.8||

Our body’s subtle self is throned within ||117.80||

Our conscious life obeys the inconscience’ laws; ||43.25||

Our conscious movements have sealed origins ||45.10||

Our darkened lives to greater darkness move; ||43.19||

Our dead past round our future’s ankles clings ||117.62||

Our dead selves come to slay our living soul. ||117.66||

Our death is made a passage to new worlds. ||53.29||

Our deepest depths are ignorant of themselves; ||45.11||

Our destiny is written in double terms: ||106.80||

Our earth is a fragment and a residue; ||26.18||

Our error crucifies Reality ||47.24||

Our error weds new knowledge on its way, ||68.105||

Our eyes are fixed on an external scene; ||11.28||

… our fate the child of our own acts, ||99.11||

Our fount of action from a darkness wells; ||107.29||

Our greater self of knowledge waits for us, ||117.71||

Our heart’s delight we have exchanged for grief, ||54.40||

Our heart’s sight is too blind and passionate. ||45.6|

Our hearts are moved by an ambiguous force; ||43.25||

Our hearts clutch at a forfeited heavenly bliss. ||19.12||

Our hearts we must inform with heavenly strength, ||47.30||

Our human ignorance moves towards the Truth ||34.11||

Our human state cradles the future god, ||66.20||

Our ignorance is Wisdom’s chrysalis, ||68.105||

Our joys are perfumes in a brittle vase. ||106.177||

Our knowledge walks leaning on Error’s staff, ||141.52||

Our larger being sits behind cryptic walls: ||117.75||

Our life is a holocaust of the Supreme. ||26.15||

Our life is a march to a victory never won. ||54.41||

Our life is a paradox with God for key. ||15.11||

Our life is a spur in a sublime soul-range, ||30.25||

Our life was born in pain and with a cry. ||107.17||

Our life’s repose is in the Infinite; ||54.19||

Our lives are caught in an ambiguous net. ||108.56||

Our lives are God’s messengers beneath the stars; ||142.28||

Our lives are inlets of an ocean’s force. ||45.9||

Our mind is a house haunted by the slain past, ||74.24||

Our mind’s unquiet search asks always light, ||43.24||

Our minds are starters in the race to God, ||47.11||

Our mortal vision peers with ignorant eyes; ||141.51||

Our nature’s glass shows not our real self; ||30.20||

Our ordeal is the hidden spirit’s choice, ||114.5||

Our own minds are the justicers of doom. ||106.114||

Our own tragedies are not enough for us, ||106.123||

Our outward happenings have their seed within, ||11.25||

Our passion heaves to wed the eternal calm, ||12.19||

Our past lives still in our unconscious selves ||117.60||

Our present fate, child of past energies. ||3.10||

Our reason cannot sound life’s mighty sea ||45.7||

Our reason only a toys’ artificer, ||68.98||

Our seekings are short-lived experiments ||47.7||

Our seekings listen to calamitous hopes. ||43.19||

Our smallest parts have room for deepest needs; ||47.18||

Our smallness saves us from the Infinite. ||124.60||

Our sight and sense are a fallible gaze and touch ||125.33||

Our soul from its mysterious chamber acts; ||117.76||

Our souls accept what our blind thoughts refuse. ||11.21||

Our souls are dragged as with a hidden leash, ||54.20||

Our souls are moved by powers behind the wall. ||45.12||

Our souls can climb into the shining planes, ||70.30||

Our souls deputed selves of the Supreme. ||47.11||

Our souls forget to the Highest to aspire. ||30.38||

Our spirit tires of being’s surfaces, ||31.19||

Our spirit’s truth lives in the naked self ||129.38||

Our springs are kept close hid beneath, within; ||45.12||

Our strength derives from an omnipotent Force, ||47.23||

Our sympathies become our tortures. ||106.118||

Our tasks are given, we are but instruments; ||129.33||

Our thoughts are parts of the immense machine, ||68.73||

Our thoughts covet the everlasting Light, ||47.23||

Our uttered sentences veil in their thought. ||13.13||

Our will tunes not with the eternal Will, ||45.6||

Ourselves within us lethal forces nurse; ||107.22||

…out of danger and pain heaven-bliss shall come, ||112.40||

Out of earth’s heavy smallness we must break, ||66.20||

Out of our thoughts we must leap up to sight, ||72.18||

Out of the darkness we still grow to light. ||106.80||

Out of the unknown we move to the unknown. ||11.5||

P

…pain came first, then only joy could be. ||108.12||

Pain is the hammer of the gods to break ||108.17||

Pain is the hand of Nature sculpturing men
To greatness: ||108.27||

Pain is the signature of the Ignorance ||110.29||

…passions that crumble to ashes while they blaze ||44.40||

…peaks where Silence listens with still heart ||78.21||

Perhaps the blindness of our will is Fate.” ||106.89||

R

Rare is the cup fit for love’s nectar wine, ||102.57||

…release the glory of God in Nature’s mud. ||40.7||

S

Safe doors cry opening near, the doomed pass on. ||106.100||

…seize the absolute in shapes that pass, ||30.3||

Sin poisons with its vivid flowers of joy ||107.27||

Since God has made earth, earth must make in her God; ||153.9||

Slowly the Light grows greater in the East, ||123.26||

Slowly the world progresses on God’s road. ||123.26||

Some ancient deep impulsion labours on: ||54.20||

Sometimes one life is charged with earth’s destiny, ||112.45||

…sorrow and joy as struggling comrades live. ||36.22||

Space is himself and Time is only he. ||15.8||

Spirit foresees, Matter unfolds its thought, ||153.23||

Spiritual thought is crammed in Matter’s forms, ||138.10||

…still the human limits the divine: ||72.18||

…still the seals are firm upon man’s soul ||90.35||

…swift and easy is the downward path, ||57.28||

T

That must be reached from which all knowledge comes. ||74.14||

The aeons ever repeat their changeless round, ||90.11||

The Artist’s joy shall laugh at reason’s rules; ||26.23||

The body is the chrysalis of a soul: ||141.27||

The body’s thrill we bartered for mere pain, ||54.40||

…the calm Transcendent bears the world, ||137.132||

The cosmic evil is too deep to unroot: ||123.25||

The cosmic suffering is too vast to heal. ||123.25||

The cosmos is no accident in Time; ||71.46||

The Creator bears the law of pain and death; ||108.36||

The cycles all rebuild and ever aspire. ||90.11||

The cosmic Player laughs within his mask, ||80.12||

The day-bringer must walk in darkest night. ||128.37||

The dead past is our background and support; ||11.32||

The doors of light are sealed to the common mind, ||152.13||

The cosmic Player laughs within his mask, ||80.12||

The day-bringer must walk in darkest night. ||128.37||

The dead past is our background and support; ||11.32||

The doors of light are sealed to common mind, ||152.13||

The earth shall be a field and camp of God, ||155.47||

The earth you tread is a border screened from heaven, ||98.15||

The Earth-Goddess toils across the sands of Time. ||11.8||

The Energy acts, the stable is its seal: ||68.14||

The Enigma’s knot is tied in human kind. ||89.23||

The eternal Entity prepares within ||47.21||

The Eternal suffers in a human form, ||108.35||

The Eternal’s quiet holds the cosmic act: ||34.6||

The Eternal’s wonders join the dance of Time. ||87.8||

The eyes of love gaze starlike through death’s night, ||137.96||

The feet of love tread naked hardest worlds. ||137.96||

The flower of Godhead grows on the world-tree: ||108.43||

The form deceives, the person is a mask; ||5.14||

The frontiers of the Ignorance shall recede, ||155.67||

The future’s road is hid from mortal sight: ||106.86||

The Godhead breaks out through the human mould: ||14.18||

The Godhead frustrate sleeps within its seed. ||89.48||

The gods are still too few in mortal forms.” ||98.27||

The gods make use of our forgotten deeds. ||106.112||

The great are strongest when they stand alone. ||112.48||

The heavens accept our broken flights at last. ||142.94||

…the hidden Something that is All. ||68.23||

The high meets the low, all is a single plan. ||129.26||

…the hushed heart hears the unuttered Word. ||82.7||

The Ideal must be Nature’s common truth, ||19.4||

The Immanent lives in man as in his house; ||15.2||

The Immortal sees not as we vainly see. ||12.21||

The Inconscient is the Superconscient’s sleep. ||138.9||

…the Inconscient too is infinite; ||83.14||

The inconscient world is the spirit’s self-made room, ||138.13||

The Knowledge by which the knower is the known, ||78.8||

The laws of the Unknown create the known. ||11.25||

The life that wins its aim asks greater aims, ||54.46||

The life that fails and dies must live again; ||54.46||

The life you lead conceals the light you are. ||98.15||

The Light now distant shall grow native here, ||30.21||

The little Mind is tied to little things: ||68.97||

The Many are the innumerable One, ||146.26||

The middle path is made for thinking man. ||106.183||

The might of heaven shall fortify earthly hearts; ||90.34||

The mighty daemon lies unshaped within, ||67.7||

The mind labours to think the Unthinkable, ||144.42||

The mind learns and knows not, turning its back to truth; ||45.3||

The mind of mortal man is led by words, ||112.11||

The master of existence lurks in us ||15.1||

The mortal cannot see God’s mighty whole ||124.29||

The mystery of God’s birth and acts remains ||80.12||

The new-born ages perish like the old, ||90.14||

The One by whom all live, who lives by none, ||79.42||

The One carries the multitude in his breast; ||146.26||

The One lives for ever. ||137.121||

The outward and the immediate are our field, ||11.32||

The Power that acts in us is not our force: ||129.33||

The powers of all the worlds have entrance here. ||43.21||

The Real with the unreal cannot mate. ||142.49||

The restless nether members tire of peace; ||7.3||
The secret God beneath the threshold dwells. ||16.2||

The seed of Godhead sleeps in mortal hearts, ||108.43||

The seeds of sins renounced sprout from hid soil; ||117.65||

The separate self must melt or be reborn ||79.26||

The Silence bears the Eternal’s great dumb seal, ||146.26||

The snake is there and the worm in the heart of the rose. ||140.35||

The soul can recognise its answering soul ||102.46||

The soul in man is greater than his fate: ||152.27||

The soul is a figure of the Unmanifest, ||144.42||

The soul is the watchful builder of its fate; ||51.15||

The soul must soar sovereign above the form ||47.30||

The soul suffering is not eternity’s key, ||110.25||

The soul that can live alone with itself meets God; ||112.49||

The soul’s desire leaps out towards passing things. ||40.16||

The soul’s ignorance is slain but not the soul. ||80.17||

The spirit is doomed to pain till man is free. ||108.23||

…the spirit is eternal and unmade ||70.7||

The spirit rises mightier by defeat; ||112.29||

The Spirit shall look out through Matter’s gaze ||155.60||

The Spirit’s greatness is our timeless source ||30.22||

The spirit’s leap towards body touches ground. ||28.19||

The stars’ changeless orbits furrow inert Space, ||68.13||

The strong climb hardly to a low-peaked height, ||98.27||

The surface men scan, the depths refuse their search: ||146.33||

The truth above shall wake a nether truth; ||155.58||

The Truth is known only when all is seen. ||68.101||

The Two who are one are the secret of all power, ||14.1||

The Two who are one are the might and right in things. ||14.1||

The universe is an endless masquerade: ||13.11||

The unremembering hours repeat the old acts, ||117.62||

The wise are tranquil; ||145.13||

The Wise who know see but one half of Truth, ||98.27||

The wise think with the cycles, ||145.16||

…the work seems vain on which our heart’s force was spent, ||90.32||

The world is a spiritual paradox ||144.40||

The world is not cut off from Truth and God. ||144.43||

The world is other than we now think and see, ||47.11||

…the world is real but ourselves too small, ||46.29||

The world quivers with a God-light at its core, ||47.5||

The world’s life falters on not seeing its goal, — ||89.46||

The world’s senseless beauty mirrors God’s delight. ||40.13||

The zero covers an immortal face. ||80.18||

There are brighter earths and wider heavens than ours. ||30.25||

There are greater destinies mind cannot surmise ||155.14||

There are Two who are One and play in many worlds; ||13.9||

There is a deeper seeing from within ||47.3||

There is a freedom in each face of Fate. ||71.46||

There is a knowledge in the heart of sleep ||51.17||

There is a meaning in each curve and line. ||112.41||

There is a meaning in each play of Chance, ||71.46||

There is a plan in the Mother’s deep world-whim, ||17.28||

There is a Power within that knows beyond
Our knowings; ||102.47||

There is a purpose in each stumble and fall; ||146.35||

There is a truth to know, a work to do; ||17.28||

There is a zero sign of the Supreme; ||80.16||

There is no end to the world’s stupendous march, ||89.50||

There is no last certitude in which thought can pause ||16.12||

There is no rest for the embodied soul. ||89.50||

There is an Influence from a Light above, ||47.9||

There is no perfect answer to our hopes; ||19.12||

This bodily appearance is not all; ||5.14||

This cosmic Nature’s balance is not ours ||106.130||

This earth alone is not our teacher and nurse; ||43.21||

This earth is full of the anguish of the gods; ||108.21||

This mire must harbour the orchid and the rose, ||29.6||

This mortal creature is his own worst foe. ||107.31||

This Nature lives tied to her origin, ||40.28||

This whole wide world is only he and she. ||13.27||

This world is a beginning and a base ||10.5||

This world is a vast unbroken totality, ||129.23||

This world is God fulfilled in outwardness. ||141.34||

This world is in love with its own ignorance, ||109.2||

This world shall be God’s visible garden-house, ||155.47||

This world was not built with random bricks of chance, ||112.41||

Those who shall part who have grown one being within? ||106.162||

Thou art thyself the author of thy pain. ||111.1||

Thou must bear the sorrow that thou claim’st to heal; ||128.37||

…thou must die to thyself to reach God’s height: ||144.36||

Thou shalt not shrink from any brother soul. ||154.32||

Thought climbs in vain and brings a borrowed light, ||19.12||

Thought dances hand in hand with Nescience ||68.105||

Thought falls from us, we cease from joy and grief; ||80.2||

…thought transcends the circles of mortal mind, ||70.3||

Thought-racked upon the wheel of birth we live, ||90.16||

Thoughts tread for ever through the listening brain; ||117.12||

Through Nature’s contraries we draw near God; ||106.80||

…through small joys and griefs thou mov’st towards God. ||110.3||

Thy goal, the road thou choosest are thy fate. ||112.31||

Thy grief is a cry of darkness to the Light; ||108.10||

Thy heart’s hopes hide from thee the Eternal’s will, ||108.8||

Thy mind’s light hides from thee the Eternal’s thought, ||108.8||

Thy soul has strength and needs no other guide ||98.51||

Time’s accidents are steps in its vast scheme. ||112.43||

Time’s sun-flower’s gaze at gold Eternity: ||73.20||

To be is not a senseless paradox; ||153.9||

…to exceed yourselves thought’s trumpets call, ||98.16||

To feed death with her works is here life’s doom. ||36.24||

…to feel love and oneness is to live ||158.24||

To free the self is but one radiant pace; ||80.22||

To house God’s joy in things Space gave wide room, ||142.4||

To house God’s joy in self our souls were born. ||142.4||

To know is best, however hard to bear.” ||106.127||

To live, to love are signs of infinite things, ||102.48||

…to the cloaked the uncloaked is naked worst. ||58.1||

Too hard for us is heaven’s indifference: ||106.123||

Too hard the gods are with man’s fragile race ||106.86||

Too faint the light that steals through Nature’s lids, ||90.15||

Too heavy falls a shadow on man’s heart; ||106.96||

Too high the fire spiritual dare not blaze. ||4.19||

Transmuted instincts shape to divine thoughts, ||34.11||

Too little the strength that now with us is born, ||90.15||

Transient creations point and hit the sky: ||45.3||

Truth born too soon might break the imperfect earth. ||89.18||

Truth has no home in earth’s irrational breast: ||146.13||

…truth is wider, greater than her forms. ||72.20||

Truth made the world, not a blind Nature-Force. ||117.73||

…Truth shall be a sun on Nature’s head ||155.53||

…Truth shall be the guide of Nature’s steps ||155.53||

Truth superhuman calls to thinking man. ||142.13||

Two are the ends of the mysterious plan. ||12.9||

U

Unknown, unfelt the mighty Witness lives ||44.43||

Unmeasured breadths and depths of being are ours. ||10.6||

Unseen here act dim huge world-energies ||45.8||

Up from man’s bare beginning is our climb; ||66.20||

…upward points the spirit’s climbing Fire. ||66.2||

V

Vain the soul’s hope if changeless Law is all: ||145.27||

… victory’s star still lights our desperate road; ||53.29||

Virtue is a grey bondage and a goal. ||107.27||

W

We are chased by a self we cannot now recall ||54.39||

… we are greater than our thoughts, ||102.47||

We are not as the gods who know not grief ||106.120||

We are not left alone in a closed scheme ||30.24||

We are sons of God and must be even as he: ||15.10||

We cannot free our gaze to reach wisdom’s sun. ||11.32||

We gaze through our world’s glass at half-seen vasts, ||117.77||

We keep the ache of breasts that breathe no more, ||106.121||

… we live in a present born from an unknown past, ||99.12||

We live self-exiled from our heavenlier home. ||70.22||

We look back to some god-phase of our birth ||54.40||

We make of our own enemies our guests: ||107.22||

We must renew the secret bond in things, ||12.8||

We must search our nature with spiritual fire: ||66.20||

…we only see a tripping game of Chance ||71.55||

We reap the fruit of our forgotten deeds. ||99.11||

We seem to live in a fiction of our thoughts ||46.25||

We shall shed the discredit of our mortal state, ||47.31||

“What help is in prevision to the driven? ||106.99||

What now we see is a shadow of what must come. ||10.3||

…what the soul imagines is made a world. ||111.13||

…what the spirit sees, creates a truth ||111.13||

When all has been explained nothing is known. ||124.52||

“When I have loved for ever, I shall know. ||137.129||

Where Ignorance is, there suffering too must come; ||108.10||

Where Nature changes not, man cannot change: ||144.4||

Whoever is too great must lonely live, ||97.10||

…with pain and labour all creation comes. ||108.20||

…without reason life is a tangle of dreams, ||146.13||

…without wisdom power is like a wind, ||123.57||

…worship lifts the worshipper’s bowed strength ||35.23||
