DEFINITIONS

TERMS STARTING WITH

Entheogen ::: A chemical substance utilized to change consciousness and explore the subtle layers of reality. Usually this refers to those chemicals that would otherwise be called hallucinogens or psychedelics, but not exclusively. Our definition includes both naturally-sourced and articially-derived chemicals. The name literally implies a "generating of divinity within" and entheogenic journeying is a method of self-discovery with much potential waiting to be explored.

Chaos Magic ::: Not a paradigm, but more of an approach to Western magic that emphasizes the flexibility of belief systems and the hacking of the fundamentals of consciousness in order to work will and affect reality. Four areas of practice notably characterizing some types of chaos magic are the application of sigils, the creation of unorthodox thoughtforms, the shifting of paradigms (sometimes even to the point of ludicrousness), and the usage of alternate methods of trance inductiuon and consciousness shifting (i.e. entheogenic journeying).

Ego Death ::: An experience, usually entheogenically-generated, that disintegrates the usual ego associated with mundane consciousness and that challenges definitions of self. This experience can include glimpses into Causal consciousness that are usually difficult to integrate or understand as well as intense fears and feelings of self-destruction as the "self" approaches the Abyss.

NDE ::: Near-Death Experience. An experience that occurs when one is close to death or is remembered when one dies and comes back. These experiences can run the gamut from Astral episodes to deeply-moving, Causal-level events. Generally these only include experiences related to accidents or illness and not to entheogenic ego death experiences, which can have a similar feel to them. A type of OBE generally.

Psychonaut ::: An explorer of the mind. This generally covers entheogenic journeying or lesser variants thereof but can be used to describe a kind of personality inclined toward such practices or to an oneironaut or similar traveler.

Shamanism ::: Belief systems that tend to be either polytheistic or animistic in their approach to reality and consciousness. Contrasted with Paganism in that Shamanism is still widely practiced in certain cultures and that in shamanism there is a person – the shaman – who is seen as a mediator between the world of spirit (the Causal and Mental Planes), the Physical world, and the Underworld. Typically shamanism encompasses entheogenic journeying as a means of healing, interacting with spirits, and altering reality.

Xanadu ::: Kubla Khan's summer capital. Revived in modernity through Samuel Taylor Coleridge's entheogen-inspired poem Kubla Khan. Synonymous with a palace of pleasure and in which one can experience the ecstasies of flesh.

1:under the Chairmanship of Carl Ruck to devise a new word for the potions that held Antiquity in awe. After trying out a number of words he came up with entheogen, `god generated within', which his committee unaninmously, adopted, not to replace the `Mystery' of the ancients, but to designate those plant substances that were and are at the very core of the Mysteries. ~ R Gordon Wasson,
2:Throughout Siberia, indeed Asia, wherever grow the trees that serve as hosts to A. muscaria, - the birch, the pine, the cedar, the larch, others - that tree is revered as giving birth to the Marvelous Herb. The entheogen at the foot of the tree is the explanation of the reverence paid to the tree by the natives round about. How has the world overlooked for so long a time this key to the mystery of the Tree of Life? ~ R Gordon Wasson,
3:Soma - as I will call it hereafter - was common everywhere in the woodlands of the temperate zone. All in all, Sonia was the entheogen of choice, until grains came to he cultivated in prehistory and then ergot emerged as a major alternative, also thoroughly safe to those who knew how to use it. No genuine entheogen is, so far as I know, an addictive under any circumstances. All entheogens inspire awe and reverence and possess power for good. ~ R Gordon Wasson,
4:Some months ago I read the Garden of Eden tale once more, after not having thought of it since childhood. I read it as one who now knew the entheogens. Right away it came over me that the Tree of Knowledge was the tree that has been revered by many tribes of Early Man in Eurasia precisely because there grows under it the mushroom, splendid to look upon, that supplies the entheogenic food to which Early Man attributed miraculous powers. He who composed the tale for us in Genesis was clearly steeped in the lore of this entheogen: he refrained from identifying the `fruit': he was writing for the initiates who would recognize what he was speaking about. I was an initiate. Strangers and also the unworthy would remain in the dark. ~ R Gordon Wasson,
