Note on the Text
Note on the Text

The talks in this book were recorded by Sri Aurobindo's disciple A. B. Purani, who came to live in Pondicherry in March 1923. At that time Sri Aurobindo used to meet in the evenings with his disciples and hold informal conversations with them. Soon after his arrival, Purani began to take part in these talks. Recognising their importance, he took notes on them afterwards, while they were still fresh in his mind. Later he elaborated these notes into readable conversations.

The talks cover two periods, 1923-1926 and 1938-1943. The first period began in March 1923 and ended in November 1926, when Sri Aurobindo retired to his room for exclusive concentration on his sadhana. The second period began more than twenty years later, at the end of 1938, after Sri Aurobindo fractured his thigh. The doctors and others attending him, including Purani, soon started engaging him in conversation, and thus began a second round of talks. Purani's notes on these later talks cover a period of some five years, but they are not as regular or detailed as his notes on the early talks. It is not known when Purani worked up his notes and prepared them for publication; it may have been some years later.

The First Edition

Evening Talks was first published in a collection of three books; each book was called a "series", meaning a series of talks. The First Series came out in 1959, the Second Series in 1961, and the Third Series in 1966. All of them were edited by Purani. His editing of the First Series and Second Series was systematic and thorough; through a process of expansion and revision, he elaborated his original detailed notes into fluent, readable conversations. The editing of the Third Series was not as rigorous. Purani expanded his notes in the same way as for the first two series, but his revision of them was less extensive and consistent; he made very few changes towards the end. It is evident that he was unable to complete the editing of these talks by the time of his death in 1965. The Third Series was brought out posthumously, in 1966.

The talks in the First Series and Second Series are arranged by subject in chapters; within each chapter, the talks are in chronological order. The talks in the Third Series are presented in simple chronological order.

The First Series and Second Series together contain all the talks of the early period (1923-26) chosen by Purani for publication and a selection from the later talks (1938-43). The Third Series contains talks of the later period that were not included in the first two series.

The Present Edition

The present (fourth) edition comprises the same talks included in the first, second and third editions, but in revised form. The revisions are of several kinds: (1) the correction of typographical, grammatical and factual errors; (2) the normalisation of spelling and capitalisation; (3) the revision of awkwardly phrased or unclear sentences; and (4) the reordering of a few talks that were out of chronological order.

The talks of the First Series and Second Series, well edited on the whole by Purani, have been very lightly revised by the present editors. The talks of the Third Series contained more errors, inconsistencies and awkwardly worded sentences than the talks in the first two series; for this reason, they have been revised more extensively. In revising the Third Series, the editors have introduced, in a few places, new material from Purani's original notebooks. These notebooks, as well as Nirodbaran's Talks with Sri Aurobindo, have been consulted wherever necessary in order to clear up doubtful points.

Publishing History

The First Series of Evening Talks was published in 1959, the Second Series in 1961. Both series were brought out by the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and printed at its press in Pondicherry. The Third Series was issued in 1966; published by the Ashram, it was printed at two different presses in Surat. In 1970 a second edition of the First Series was published by the Ashram and printed at a press in Bombay. A second edition of the Second Series came out in 1974; the publisher and printer are not known. A second edition of the Third Series was apparently never issued. In 1982 a third edition containing all three series in a single volume was published by the Sri Aurobindo Society, Pondicherry, and printed at the All India Press, Pondicherry. A second impression, published by the Society and printed at the Ashram Press, came out in 1995. The present (fourth) edition is published by the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and printed at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram Press.
