The feminine polarity is but a single point; the nine
Sefirot which she acquires are considered to be supple
mental. "Kingdom (the feminine polarity) is the
actual source for the nether beings. She alone makes
room for darkness and the actual existence of evil in the
government. The vacuum is never due to the intention
of the Bestower, but is the result of the iniquity of the
recipient. Nevertheless, as far as "Kingdom is con
cerned, the vacuum, or flaw which permits the existence
of evil has two meanings: on the one hand, it debases
her, and on the other, it elevates her, since all of this has
been instituted for no other purpose than to disclose the
upper unity, and no glory of the Creator is disclosed
except through "Kingdom."* It is for this reason that
the Creator fashioned "Kingdom with an innate lack

and obscurity which put her in need of extensive emen
dations, whereas the bestower (in this case ZO) who, on
his own part, lacks nothing, requires no such emendations.

When "Kingdom, having been emended, is com
pletely perfect she emerges from the evil, transforming it
to good. Then praise for "Kingdom rises to the Infinite
Itself, for the Glory of the Creator is exalted through
her, and she is called the "crown of her husband. Be
cause the Creator, blessed be He, desired that this source
to the nether beings should achieve this elevated goal, He
made her incomplete. Moreover, He caused her to be
dependent upon mans deeds, for receiving her full
measure of Light. In this way, only a small portion of
the bounty that is rightly hers is settled in her, while the
balance remains with the bestower above her. For if the
nether beings merit the bestowal of bounty they will
receive their additional Light (that which was withheld
from Kingdom ) and their worth will be infinitely
exalted. If, on the other hand, the nether beings are
not meritorious, they continue to remain at their inferior
stage.

If, from the first, the nether beings had not been
subjected to evil and therefore crowned with all their
Lights, the emendation which must be effected in "King
dom would never have been accomplished. To accom
modate man s prerequisite, "Kingdom forms only a
single source point and an exceedingly small Light which
is supplemented and rounded out by the nine Scfirot.
When man increases in merit, not only does "Kingdom
increase her power, but also ZO, the bestower which is
above "Kingdom. Thus it is said: "Give ye strength

unto God. (Psalms LXVIII, 35). This signifies only
that man is the cause for the additional blessing and
increase of power originating in the bestower.

The bounty here referred to is the brain acquired
by ZO; at times it departs from him and at other times
it returns. But the nether beings lack that essence of
Light which is necessary for their construction, and for
that reason "Kingdom is no more that one poi nt. More
over, in ZO this causes only a departure of Light, where
as in "Kingdom it results in destruction of the entire
edifice. In the case of the bestower only the bounty is
withheld whereas the nether beings are actually ruined.
This is what is meant when we speak of "the descent of
the nine Sefirot of 'Kingdom to the shells. The feminine
polarity ("Kingdom) has its source in the Sefirot of
"Knowledge, "Beauty and "Foundation (The middle
pillar) and is bound with them throughout the gesta
tion, infancy and maturity of ZO.

The Creators goal is conveyed in the verse from the
Psalms, for it is written: "Your wonderful works which
you have done and your thoughts which are toward
us . . . (Psalm XL, 6). For the whole arrangement of
His bestowals is intended exclusively for the nether
beings. Yet whatever is bestowed is contained within
fixed limits and measures, according to mans needs.

Thus, with every order of Light which is arranged
in ZO, whether it be that of the three lower Sefirot
"Triumph, "Glory and "Foundation, which designates
ZOs external Parezuf in the stage of gestationor that
of "Mercy, "Judgment and "Beauty which is the
middle Parezuf (the stage of nourishment), or that of

"Wisdom, "Intelligence and "Knowledge, which is
the internal Parezuf (the stage of maturity), "Kingdom
must necessarily be bound, for she complements and
completes ZO, and all these Lights she requires for her
existence, are intended for her benefit. Therefore the
union of this feminine polarity with ZO must be per
petual; every thought of bestowal is intended for her
alone so that she may transmit this Light to Israel.
