These three conditions, mentioned in connection
with the Sefirot, denote varying aspects of the Lights
which the Creator caused to radiate within the created
beings. These Lights, governed by law and order, are
arranged as interdependent powers all combined, variously
interrelated, and forming different aspects of the Lights
which are required for the tree of the Parezufim.

"Enfoldment means that the upper Parezufim are
encompassed by the lower ones, or that the substance
of the upper ones is hidden in the interior of the lower
ones. At this point we may see that the advantage
lies with the enfolded ones, which are concealed, and
that the lower Parezufim , or those responsible for the
enfoldment, react to this process.

The idea of "brain, namely, the last three Sefirot
"Triumph, "Glory and "Foundationof an "upper
Parezuf which become the brain of the succeeding Par-
ezuf , is that in order to complete the lower one it is
necessary for a portion of the upper one to enter it.
The "inner brain is the more direct source of a
Parezuf, while the "encircling Lights (the zelem)
are the remoter source.

UNION, GESTATION, BIRTH

175

Our use of the terms "union, gestation and birth
in these discussions of the Light processes is appropriate
since all of these stages ramify from each other as cause
and effect. So that when one Light, which is a single
attri bute, issues by the power of two antecedent Lights,
it is considered to be caused by them. Thus the initial
stage is inevitably an action which results from the
meeting of these two Lights. In other words, the two
together act to issue their offspring.

When we examine the details of this matter, we
see that the subjects and Lights mentioned earlier issue
gradually as cause and effect. In them we discern the
origin for substance and the origin for form: or in
other words, an origin for the general substance and
an origin for the specific being. Hence, each attri bute
or Light is preceded by the two Lights that give it
birth. One Light provides its general makeup and sub
stance, the other provides the details in its form.

By these means it is transmitted from the general
to the particular cause. Following the union of the two
Lights, which is involved in the act of transmission,
the offspring issues. This is known as the union, that
is, when the two Lights connect with each other.

The transmission of the entity from the general
cause to the particular one, and the period preceding
its actual issuance, that is, while it is still in the par
ticular origin (where it takes on individual identity)
is designated gestation or pregnancy. Its actual issuance
is designated birth.

A closer analysis of the actions of these causes them
selves reveals function involving all the Sifirot known

DETAILED OUTLINE OF THE KABBALAH

as "Foundation and which we call "kissing. Different
types of unions must take place between the two causes.
They are the functions which are instituted in them
in order to produce offspring; for example, there are
unions which pertain to the inner Lightssuch as
kissing, which serves to unite the inner Lights, and there
are also unions of the vessels which denote the embrace
and the uniting of the "Foundations. Thes serve to
set the vessels parallel to each other, and to combine
them in accordance with what is decreed in them.

Finally, when we examine all the parts that are
necessary to make up a Varezuf these being the con
ditions discerned in one of the attri butes in its completed
stagewe will also understand the unions and combin
ations which occur in all the parts, and in the parts of
those parts. Indeed, according to the particular pro
gression, we will discern still further that even when
one of the entities is actually issued, its being is as yet
incomplete. Only later does it become complete. This
course of development involves the idea of two periods;
one immaturity, when an entity must be nourished
for the child needs his mother to nourish him; the
other, when it reaches maturity.

That is, the offspring must still attain completion.
But its completion comes to it from none other than
the very origin which gave it birth.
