The general source of nature as we know it, in
cluding all of its destructive forces lies in the world and
in the shattering of the Primordial Kings. When we
refer here to nature, we do not mean the species, but
rather the abstract qualities of Nature herself.

After the shattering of the vessels came the emend
ation. And then the attri butes (Sefirot) of good, from
which all evil was expelled, were fashioned on the one
hand, while the evil which was expelled from them made
up the Sefirot of the "other side, also known the husks.
Then, according to its latent predisposition, nature im
planted its species admixture of good and evil, as befitted
them.

The Primordial Kings represent the origins of ex
isting nature in its imperfect state and not as it will be
in the time to come, when there will be a "new heaven
and a new earth. In keeping with this imperfect exist
ence, the Creator decreed the annulment which brought
about the shattering that became the source of all des
tructive force.

For the perfect existence, the Creator decreed no
annulment. Everything pertaining to the perfect em-

endation of the future has its roots above. Then all
defects caused by the shattering will be thoroughly em
ended, and nothing in nature will ever suffer any annul
ment. Thus it is written: 'Tor as the new Heavens and
the new earth, which I will make shall remain before me,
said the Lord . . . (Isaiah LXVI, 22).

The Creator only fashioned an incomplete source
so that evil might come into existence in order to test
man. He therefore fashioned the Kings incompletely ac
cording to the incompleteness of evil.

Because the source of the evil spirit or husk sprung
from the Primordial Kings, they were neither arranged
in parallel pillars, nor united with the feminine polarity.
In addition they lacked all the other emendations which
are now in effect in the world of Emanation.

As long as the Creator holds united in His grasp the
two modes of supervision, that is, the "mode of the
shining Countenance and the "mode of the Concealed
Countenance, there is no corruption, and no destruction,
in existence; for corruption and darkness only come into
existence when He completely conceals His Face from
the world. At that point all the demons and degrees of
defilement come into being. This is conveyed in the
phrase "death of the Kings, meaning that the Lights
departed, leaving only vessels which serve as the roots of
the defects, that deprive the world of perfection. From
the supervision of the "Concealed Face issued the husk
(or Sitra ahara) and all that springs from it.

There is an expression in the Tjohar to the effect that
"the Master struck the iron with a hammer and brought
out sparks. This refers to the Creator, Who issued

degrees and numerous large worlds, all of which he bound
into man by means of deep ties and big chambers or cells,
like the complicated mechanism of a watch. His primary
purpose in all this was to effect complete goodness and
perfect emendation in His creatures.

However in these chambers there is also evil, which
also exists for the ultimate promulgation of the good.
Those constituents that are intrinsically good sire designed
for eternal dominion, whereas the evil is made to be
subdued and overcome. Thus, though we find that evil
in itself is nothing more than monstrous corruption and
absolute loss, when it is introduced into the sum total of
the chambers, it too becomes converted to good. It
therefore serves no purpose other than that of being
overcome and bearing witness to the unity of God.
However, since all is newly created from Him, and there
is nothing holy that is not the Creator Himself to begin
with, this evil, of necessity, had to be devised just as it
was in its first stage. When it is connected with the
other contents in the chambers, it can be converted. So
that when the Supreme Thought proceeds to emend the
image of man (the sum total of all the chambers) He
first brings forth the whole of evil itself and the entire
scope thereof, including all the damaging agents com
prised in the Primordial Kings. The Creators intention
for them was only that they incur annulment in existing
being.

Thereafter the Supreme Thought brings forth the
remaining chambers and joins evil with them so that
evil might be subdued and not, itself, subdue. In this
way evil too enters in as one of those causes that effect

complete good in man, by reason of having been van
quished by it, and thereby bearing witness to the unity of
God.

Note that everything pertaining to evil is comprised
in the Sefiroi of the Name 52, the world of Points. The
origin of the existence of imperfect beings is in the reign
of the Primordial Kings. The origin of the annulment
of existent being is in the annulment of the Kings.
Everything that came into existence anew through their
annulment constitutes the source of all destruction and
loss that is found in nature. The sum total of all the
good chambers are comprised in the image of man.*
When the essence of evil is connected with these chambers
for the sole purpose of being vanquished, it too will con
vert into goodness for all time. This connotes the emen
dation of the Name 52 through the Name 45, apd means
also that the origin of darkness and evil will revert to
good, since it stands ready to receive the emendation of
the Name 45, and to reject the dominion of evil.

Remember that the Thought of the Creator from
the start was aimed at making room for the existence of
evil, and for that reason He issued imperfect origins for
existent being. But now (at the time of emendation)
He intends that darkness and evil revert to good. Then
He will regenerate all these imperfect beings, bringing
them to greater perfection than ever. The origins for
both imperfect and perfect beings were devised in the
Sefirot that were fashioned following the emendation.

* TR. N. By "man the author refers to the Name 45 which
has the numerical value of Adam (man), and which was issued
for the purpose of emending the Name 52 by uniting with it.
