book class:General Principles of Kabbalah

subject class:Kabbalah

Out of ten internal and ten external Sefirot, Adam
Kadmon was fashioned. This creation denotes the ex
istence of two types of supervision: one, the "mode of
the Shining Countenance, the other the "mode of
the Concealed Countenance, from these two, perfection
and imperfection are drawn into the government of
the worlds, while in the created being, they affect
the soul and the body. When the body dominates, then
imperfection has sway, and the government is function
ing through the Concealed Countenanceto the extent
that man has allowed his body sway. But when the soul
dominates, then perfection has sway to the extent that
man allows his soul to rule.

There are two distinct modes of supervision in the
sequential order, each with its definitely fixed laws.
They represent respectively the Line of Light, and the
Impression. When they are united and intermingled,
the resulting perfection eliminats fallibilities. At this
point it is the combination of Light and Impression in
unity and completion that governs the worlds. From
both of these, as a composite of internal and external,
Adam Kadmon is produced.

TEN INTERNAL AND TEN EXTERNAL SEFIROT

143

The principal government of the world is the off
spring which issues from this union of Light and Im
pression for the government was only established after
this union was already consummated. It is in accord
with this combination of Line and Impression that the
government is established for all time, but it is variable
so that at first it will spring from the ruling Line of
Light, or the internal Light, then again, when they
triumph, it will spring from the ruling vessels, or the
external Light. Either supervision is nevertheless achieved
through the combination of the two governing powers.
This offspring (or supervising power) constitutes the
branches of Adam Kadmon, which are all issued after
the internal and external Lights have already united.
